Collyn Rivers

Author/engineer, Collyn Rivers practices what he publishes. Originally trained (by the UK’s Royal Air Force) as a ground radar engineer, he later worked as a research engineer at Vauxhall/Bedford Motors, then (in Australia) founded and ran Electronics Today International. It was published in seven countries and within seven years became the world’s most successful popular electronics publication. Collyn later started up his own technical publishing company specialising in the RV and solar areas.

Collyn Rivers has designed and built stand-alone solar systems of all sizes, from a big property system in Australia’s remote Kimberley {LINK} to RV systems – from VW Kombi to off-road truck size. He and his wife currently live in an all-solar home in Church Point, NSW, Australia. See also his associated website

“Some blokes fit an awful lot into one lifetime. Some people are unsung national treasures. Collyn Rivers is one of these. Collyn [and his wife Maarit] built one of Australia’s most sustainable homes – but don’t assume the result has much in common with many owner-built houses: here is both adventurous beauty and technical precision.”

Building Designers Brief

“Anyone who has been an electronics enthusiast over the past 30 years or so will be well aware of Collyn Rivers. He was the founding editor of “Electronics Today International” (ETI) magazine which went on to have a number of very successful editions in the UK and elsewhere, as well as being very successful in Australia.”

Silicon Chip Magazine

“Collyn, as a former Bulletin and Australian Business technical editor, has the happy knack of getting technical information across to the average enthusiast in a straightforward and comprehensible way. Sprinkled throughout the book are little gems of information you’ll only get from an experienced Australian solar power user.”

Alan Gray

Editor, Earth Garden Magazine

In 1959 Collyn Rivers and two friends took off on a journey across Africa – including the Sahara Desert.  Turmoil in many African countries has made the trip they took impossible since that time.  They were the last. Anthony Fleming was one of the three.  He has made a video about their adventure that has been viewed on YouTube over 190,000 times.  You can see it here.  Collyn’s story about the journey is below the video.

I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power!  I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.
